This is Why I Love my Job!

One of the great things about being a Young Adult Librarian is that you get to talk about books. Not only do you get to talk about them, but they pay you for it! But sometimes the questions are harder than others.

Young patron: "How did Voldemort die?"

Me: "Well, Harry killed him in the duel."

YP: "But, he didn't cast the killing curse."

Me: "No he didn't but his spell made Voldemort's killing curse rebound onto him."

YP: "I still don't understand."

At this point I decided that it was necessary to do whatever it took to satisfy this young girl's curiosity. But pictures spoke louder than words.

The Importance of Having a Well Rounded Collection

I have been extremely fortunate to be given the opportunity at NA to order books for the YA collection. Though once and a while, you receive reminders in the darndest places about why it is important to have a wide varity of books that focus on all opinions and points of view.
This morning while doing the pick list for our holds at DU, I happened to be pulling titles in the 641's. Since is can be costly to purchase cookbooks, I think it is great that we have such a wide variety of styles, flavors and authors in our section. I know that I have sampled receipes from mac and cheese to cakes, and of course in many diet or heart healthy options as well. But I had two back to back picks that just made having a well rounded collection crystal clear.
First was Veganomicon: the Ultimate Vegan Cookbook by Terry Hope Romero and Isa Chandra Moskowitz. Right after that was this... The Whole Beast: Nose to Tail Eating by Fergus Henderson.
They where for two seperate patrons at two different libraries, but I'm not sure they could have been any futher apart on the spectrum. As for me, I'm not sure I would be cooking out of either one!
